Polymethyl Methacrylate Plastic – PMMA
Polymethyl methacrylate, often abbreviated as PMMA, is a synthetic material widely used in various fields due to its unique properties. Also known as “acrylic glass” or “Plexiglas” (registered trademark), PMMA is a transparent polymer that mimics the appearance of glass while offering additional advantages.
Properties and Characteristics
- Transparency: One of the most notable characteristics of PMMA is its transparency. With a high light transmission index, it allows up to 92% of visible light to pass through, making it an excellent choice for applications requiring optical clarity.
- Impact Resistance: Compared to traditional glass, PMMA is much more impact resistant. Although it is not unbreakable, it is capable of withstanding impacts that could break glass.
- Lightweight: PMMA is much lighter than glass, making it easier to transport and handle. This lightness makes it a popular material for applications such as window glazing and advertising panels.
- Ease of manufacture: This polymer can be easily molded, cut, and hot-formed, making it versatile for a variety of shapes and applications. It can also be thermoformed to create complex parts and specific shapes.
- UV resistance: PMMA is relatively resistant to ultraviolet rays, allowing it to maintain its clarity and resist yellowing even when exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.
